Living With a Roommate - Setting the Ground Rules

Having a roommate can be both beneficial as well as costly when it comes to a lot of things. If you decide to live with one, make sure you choose the right one so that you can reap the rewards of it and minimize the problems you may face. If you do this, trust me, you'll be much better off in the long term.

First off, the negatives of living with a roommate can be many. Normally, you have to share a bathroom as well as everything else in the apartment. This can become a pain sometimes when you both want to use the bathroom to shower or use the common area television to watch different shows. In addition, roommates can be messy, leaving their clothing and food everywhere, or loud, by blasting their music or waking you up if they come in from a late night out.

There are ways to control these negatives and limit them from happening by creating some ground rules at the outset of living together. First, set out the time period when you normally get ready for school or work in the morning and need the bathroom. Second, declare that each person must immediately clean up their mess after eating and that no clothing can be left in the common areas of the apartment. And finally, both of you must remain respectful of the other's privacy and need for sleep past a certain hour.

If you can create an effective plan for dealing with the potential problems of having a roommate, you can then enjoy the many benefits of having one.
